Operation Head Start
The Sacramento Suzuki Violin Studio’s Head Start Scholarship Program, launched in January 2009, has been developed in consultation with various Head Start schools in the Sacramento areas to meet the needs of gifted and exceptionally motivated Head Start Pre-K children who require a challenge beyond the traditional classroom music curriculum.
Our Goals
We endeavor to broaden the lives of financially disadvantaged children, to teach good habits that will carry over into their lives' work, and to expose them to new opportunities for success. The Sacramento Suzuki Violin Studio’s Operation Head Start will continue to provide for students the following:
1) Free group violin lessons to selected children of the Head Start Pre-K Program.
2) Special musical opportunities through a combination ensemble participation, music enrichment classes and experiences.
3) Support and encouragement, so that students may develop their artistic potential to the highest level possible.
Family Partnership
Beginning with your child's enrollment in the program, your family becomes part of our extended SSVS family. Family Partnership brings teachers, staff and parents together in a relationship of mutual respect and trust. We will work together to provide the best possible program for your child.
Leadership Training
We encourage parents to have a voice in developing all aspects of the program through their participation in the Parent Policy Committees.
Q&A:
How to apply
You are encouraged to ask your Head Start School to contact us to find out how your school may participate.
Is the application available on-line?
Due to the nominations process, the application is not available on line. Applications are available through designated nominating officials at each school.
Enrollment
Families are notified in June about September enrollment. Children may be enrolled until May in any given year if space is available. Once your child is accepted into the program, SSVS staff will contact you to provide information and answer your questions.
Are students interviewed for the program?
The Selection Committee chooses approximately 5 applicants from each participating school for interview. These “finalists” are interviewed in February and early March.
In addition to many parent and grandparent volunteers, the program enjoys the participation of undergraduate and graduate student field placements, college and university faculty members, consultants from community agencies, high school students, and interested community residents.
